Once the water cools to normal temperature, repeat the boiling process. This cycle should generally be done 5 times, though some driftwood may require up to 8 cycles. This pre-treatment process can be tedious and requires patience.

1. After the 5 boiling cycles, soak the driftwood in clean water, changing the water several times. This process typically removes the tannins within a week.

2. When first placed in water, the driftwood will appear black, indicating the tannins have not been fully released. The wood is fully tannin-free when the water turns red.

For those who find the boiling and soaking process too time-consuming, an alternative method is to use fish tank filter resin particles. Place the filter material in the filter bucket and turn on the cycle. This will quickly absorb the tannins released by the submerged driftwood, preventing the water from turning yellow.
