Driftwood is a natural material, without any artificial treatment. Before placing it into a fish tank, you should follow these steps:

1. Wash and clean the driftwood thoroughly with a brush.
2. Boil the driftwood in hot water for about 2-3 hours to release the tannins, until the water color no longer changes.
3. Soak the driftwood in water at room temperature for approximately 7 days.
4. Remove the driftwood and wash it again.
5. Disinfect the driftwood by soaking it in a potassium hypertonic acid solution for 20 minutes, then rinse it with clean water.
6. After disinfection, place the driftwood aside with some water on it for 2 days. Then, wash it again before using it for tank decoration.

It's important to note that:

1. Driftwood can slightly alter the water pH, making it more acidic. If the driftwood is used without proper pretreatment or the pretreatment is insufficient, the sudden change in water pH or quality can cause discomfort or even death to the fish or shrimp.
2. Some shrimp may be sensitive to changes in pH and water quality, so it's best to test or check before adding the driftwood to the tank.
3. Driftwood contains nutrients, and over time, it may develop a "white/black" "mold" when submerged in water. This is a normal occurrence and is safe for the aquatic life. You can remove the growth by washing and cleaning the driftwood with a brush, or introduce grass shrimp into the tank, as they will consume the growth.
4. If the driftwood is intended for decoration in a reptile or amphibian tank, where it will be used in a dry environment, simply washing and cleaning it is sufficient.

Driftwood is a natural material, and the size and shape of each piece will vary. If you intend to submerge the driftwood in water, it's recommended to soak it for 3-5 days beforehand to ensure a good underwater effect. Please note that driftwood may not always sink in water due to density issues. To improve the chances of sinking, boiling the driftwood in hot water for 1-2 hours can be helpful.
