Mangrove ecosystems, located between latitudes 5°N and 5°S, spanning across 118 countries, represent a unique coastal habitat situated in the intertidal zone or brackish water of tropical and subtropical regions. These special ecological conditions, including high salinity, nutrient limitation, tidal gradients, high temperatures, excessively high light, and muddy anaerobic or sandy soil, have led to various morphological and physiological adaptations in the inhabiting species. These adaptive features act as effective selectors, driving the generation of unique functional metabolites with highly distinctive chemical scaffolds and significant pharmaceutical application potential.

In recent decades, numerous metabolites with uncommon structures and efficacious bioactivities have been discovered in both mangrove-derived microorganisms and mangrove plants. As a result, mangrove ecosystems have emerged as an attractive biodiversity hotspot, captivating the attention of organic chemists and pharmacologists alike. Many novel and unique chemical structures, encompassing a wide range of structural classes, have suggested diverse biosynthetic origins, containing novel functional genes and corresponding enzymes with unique catalytic functions.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest and most important developments in the discovery of bioactive products from mangrove ecosystems. We welcome articles that describe recent studies and pertinent reviews, focusing on the correlation between chemical structures, chemical synthesis, biosynthesis, genomic and metabolomics approaches, biological activities, and pharmaceutical mechanisms. We are currently in the process of assembling a group of top researchers whose work we would like to feature in this collection, and we invite you to participate.

The unique ecological conditions of mangrove habitats have led to the evolution of diverse adaptive mechanisms in the inhabiting species, resulting in the production of highly distinctive metabolites with significant pharmaceutical potential. The discovery of these novel compounds has positioned mangrove ecosystems as an attractive biodiversity hotspot, garnering substantial interest from the scientific community. This Special Issue provides a platform to showcase the latest advancements in this field, fostering collaboration and advancing our understanding of the remarkable chemical and biological diversity within mangrove ecosystems.
